Hall Creek represents a stream community at Severson Dells. Our creek is considered a headwater stream because its watershed is less than 2 miles wide. It is also considered a third order stream because it flows into three other rivers before reaching the ocean (the Rock River then the Mississippi River). Hall Creek’s unique position near the top of the Rock River Valley Watershed means that it is very sensitive to rainfall. It floods quickly after rains, sometimes within hours, and falls back to its regular flow shortly after. Hall creek has a medium-gradient flow throughout the floodplain forest community. It has a mix of rock-bottom and mud-bottom microhabitats, and its depth varies from a few inches to three feet in some of its pools.
