Summer Camp Staff

The Summer Camp Assistant works with the Education staff on planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in daily activities and explorations for day camp.   You are the spirit of the summer camp experience! Your fellow Summer Camp staff will rely on you, children will look up to you and parents will trust you. Your fresh energy, ideas, consistent supervision, patience and commitment to the camp community will make this summer one of our best.

Severson Dells is excited to partner with the Boone County Conservation District, Dekalb County Forest Preserves and the Natural Land Institute to offer opportunities for AmeriCorps volunteers to engage in environmental education, habitat restoration and community science.

Both the Environmental Education and Community Science AmeriCorps Positions share the following benefits:

  • Medical and Dental Insurance for full time (1,700 hour members)
  • Eligible for Employers of National Service and Schools of National Service upon successful completion of service
  • Federal Education Award- $7,395 upon successful completion of service
  • Reduced rent housing available for $350 a month, with all utilities included except internet.
  • $22,495 cost of living stipend



Environmental Education AmeriCorps Member Position

YOUR ROLE. Members support school field trip programs, after school programs, and public programs to help students and adults learn about local habitats, predator and prey interactions, food webs, animal and plant adaptations, and basic ecology of the area. During the term of service, Members will receive training in all of the above topics, best practices in environmental education, group management, and have the opportunity to develop and try nature-based lessons and community programs of their own. We love to support members that want to try new and creative ways to connect people with nature. Severson Dells encourages people of all backgrounds and social identities to apply. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
40 % Direct Teaching-
teach and lead field trips, in-school, and afterschool programs with support of School Programs Coordinator. Host hikes and activity stations for Public Programs with support of Public Programs Coordinator. 
20% Curriculum and Materials Development
- develop educational curriculum and lesson plans for school groups, general public, and camps, using current environmental education best practices. Create corresponding materials for lessons and programs with support of School Programs and Public Programs Coordinators.
15% Social Media Content
- with support from the Community Engagement Coordinator, create educational social media content including graphics and videos. 
15% Blog Writing
- collaborates with the Community Engagement Coordinator to provide high quality, accurate content for publications and social media, including education and promotional material. 
10% Support
- support annual special events, assist with minor facilities and grounds needs. 


 Community Science AmeriCorps Member Position

YOUR ROLE. Members support Community Science programs like Bumblebee, Bluebird, Frog, Plant, Water Quality, and Bat Monitoring projects. During the term of service, Members will receive training in all of the above topics, best practices in participatory science, volunteer management, and have the opportunity to implement some environmental monitoring projects of their own. We love to support members that want to try new and creative ways to connect people with nature. Severson Dells encourages people of all backgrounds and social identities to apply. 


SERVICE TIME:
25 % Field Work- collect data for Community Science projects in woodland, prairie, savannah, creek, and pond habitats.
25% Data Management and Analysis- enter data, analyze results, standardize systems, prepare reports, graphs, and maps.
15% Volunteer Coordination- train, support, and communicate with volunteer Community Scientists.
15% Education- support public education programming and events.
10% Social Media and Blog Content- with support from the Community Engagement Coordinator, create educational social media and blog content about Community Science and related efforts including graphics and videos. 
10% Support- support annual special events, assist with minor facilities and grounds needs.
