TRAVELING LECTURES

Severson Dells Nature Center offers traveling lectures on a variety of topics. We would love to come to your organization and share the knowledge of our staff. Programs usually last for an hour, with a 45 minute lecture and 15 minutes for questions.

Please fill out our contact form below and we will reply to you as soon as possible. Current lectures are listed below, although we are open to adding new topics to our offerings.

  • Absent Factors (Ecological Anachronisms)

Have you ever wondered why honey locust trees have such intimidating clusters of immense thorns? Other plant species also exhibit adaptations that appear to be over-engineered in terms of current environmental conditions; yet nature is inherently conservative, with nothing seeming to go to waste. So how do we explain such mysteries?

  • Ancient Glaciation & Today's Landscape

Ice sheets have covered much of the northern hemisphere from time to time. While much of eastern Illinois was covered by the most recent (Wisconsinan) Glaciation, Winnebago County was last under ice during the earlier Illinoian Glacial Stage. Learn how ice-age events have shaped our landscape—and our flora.

  • Ecosystems & Communities

The natural world can be seen to function at a number of cohesive levels. Local habitat niches represent various communities that combine to form ecosystems that comprise larger planetary biomes. This presentation will explore the components and functions of regional ecosystems and local plant communities.

  • Feeding Birds in Winter

Whether you are an avid bird feeder or new to the hobby, this informative program helps you learn which foods to feed, which feeders to use (and why), how to deal with squirrels, and which birds are most common at our feeders here in Northern Illinois.  Includes a DIY “suet” recipe, and tips for training birds to eat directly out of your hand!

  • Forest Ecology

Forests are dynamic, diverse, and often overlooked ecosystems. Learn about their unique trophic structure, inter-species interactions, seasonal changes and more. You will walk away with new knowledge of and a renewed appreciation for forests.

  • Geology & Soil of Northern Illinois

Learn about the story of Northern Illinois as told by the rocks and soil beneath our very feet! Experience hands-on learning activities that will bring the presentation material to life. Leave knowing a general foundation of Geology and Soil Science and feeling more excited about rocks and soil than ever!

  • Landscapes of Winnebago County

There is much more to Winnebago County than farmland and cities. Learn about the natural wonders this county boasts and the unique flora and fauna associated with them.

  • Prairies & Savannas

Midwestern prairies and oak savannas are ecologically similar in a number of ways. Both are places of relatively abundant sunlight and may occupy similar positions on the landscape, thus sharing a similar flora. Come meet some of the plants that are characteristic of these grassy communities.

  • Wild Turkey in Fact & Folklore

From Benjamin Franklin’s proposed national bird to your Thanksgiving dinner, Turkeys have played a significant part in our country's culture. These magnificent birds are so much more than a good sandwich or a neighborhood nuisance, as they play an important role in our ecosystem. Learn more about this uncommonly special common bird.
