VOLUNTEER

Our Volunteers

Severson Dells has many valuable volunteers who help with the educational school programs, family events, tend to our butterfly garden, host and hostess on weekends, maintain our library, keep our fish happy and so much more!

Volunteers are involved in many different activities, limited only by enthusiasm, interest and available time.  We realize that each volunteer is unique and therefore provide many opportunities where their contributions can be recognized. There are many different volunteer positions available, with a range of commitment levels.

Volunteers’ ages range from youth to senior citizens, and they provide thousands of hours of service per year.  To all the volunteers: THANK YOU!  We couldn’t do it without you!

Volunteer Positions

We are always on the search for more wonderful volunteers to join the team.

Check out the job descriptions below.

Education Program

Leader

Do you love kids and being outside? You’d make a great education volunteer! These amazing folks lead groups of students on hikes and fun, hands-on programming. Help kids howl like coyotes, touch a toad, or smell wildflowers for the first time. You don’t need a background in education or knowledge of local nature, we'll provide you with all of the training you need. Education Volunteers can sign up for as many or few 2-hour shifts as they like. Most shifts are Tuesday-Friday between 8:00am and 2:00 pm. If you’re interested, please contact andrea@seversondells.org or call 815-335-2915!

Nature Center Host

Nature Center Host Volunteers staff the front desk on Saturdays and Sundays in 4-hour shifts.  Volunteers are also needed occasionally during the week when all staff are out of the office for various functions.  Shifts vary depending on the need.  Duties include answering the telephone, greeting visitors, conducting gift shop sales, and assisting members in checking out library materials.  Ability to use multi-line telephone and give directions to Severson Dells Forest Preserve from various locations in the area are a must.  General awareness and appreciation of nature helpful.  Warm and welcoming personality a definite plus.

Conservation Crew

Help remove invasive plants, collect native seed, and plant new seedlings with the Severson Dells Conservation Crew.  Restoration volunteers meet the second Saturday and fourth Monday of each month from 9:00 AM to noon.  You can participate in the restoration and management of our natural areas!  Working alongside fellow volunteers in the beauty of the outdoors is both gratifying and invigorating.  No experience necessary; training and tools are supplied.  Bring a water bottle and stay hydrated.  Dress in layers and expect to get dirty!
