North American Least Shrew

(Cryptotis parva)

STATUS: Native, “Least Concern”

DESCRIPTION: One of the smallest mammals, it only grows to 3 inches long. Its long snout is never longer than twice the length of its hind foot.

DIET: Caterpillars, beetle larvae, earthworms, centipedes, slugs, and sow bugs.

HABITAT: Grasslands, marshes, meadows, preferring wetter habitats.

NOTES: They are being used to research ways to prevent nausea and vomiting in response to chemotherapy.
