STATUS: Native, “Least Concern”

DESCRIPTION: They can grow to be 6-12 inches in length and can weigh up to a half a pound.

DIET: The Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel feeds on grass, weed seeds, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and crickets

HABITAT: Grasslands and prairies

NOTES: This species is strictly diurnal and is more active during hot summer days. They have small glands inside their mouths used to rub against things to mark their scent. Thirteen-lined Squirrels greet each other by using nose or lip touching. Predators are birds of prey and snakes.
