STATUS: Native, “Least Concern”

DESCRIPTION: . They grow up to 3 ft. long and weigh up to 5 lbs. Muskrats have tails that, unlike beavers, are flat vertically.

DIET: Their diet consist of cattails, water lilies, sedges, ferns, mussels, snails, crayfish, and frogs.

HABITAT: found in semi-aquatic areas. They live in ponds, lakes, swamps, and marshes.

NOTES: Muskrats have glands that secrete a musk for communication to warn intruders off. They have a poor sense of smell, sight, and hearing. They are usually nocturnal.
