Masked Shrew

STATUS: Native, “Least Concern”

DESCRIPTION: It can grow to reach 13 cm in length and weighs 5 g.

DIET: It is an opportunistic generalist that eats insects, worms, snails, small rodents, salamanders, and seeds. It eats three times its body weight each day.

HABITAT: Arid grasslands, moist areas, woodland, and tundra. Population size correlates with high moisture.

NOTES: Predators include shrews, hawks, owls, shrikes, snakes, heron, foxes, leopard frogs, trout, and weasels. They are susceptible to many types of parasites like fleas and tapeworms.
