STATUS: Native, “Least Concern”

DESCRIPTION: They range in length from about 24-37 inches and weigh anywhere from 4-23 lb.

DIET: 40% invertebrates, 33% plant material and 27% vertebrates.

HABITAT: They live anywhere from warm, tropical areas to cold grasslands. They will also live in farmlands, suburban, and urban areas. Raccoons prefer to build dens in trees, woodchuck burrows, caves, mines, deserted buildings, barns, garages, rain sewers, or houses.

NOTES: They are well adapted to living near humans. Raccoons require ready access to water, and thus enjoy washing their food and hands when eating. Predators are coyotes, hawks, and owls. They are nocturnal animals and therefore have great night vision.
